Since I was a kid, fighting games have been a part of my life. The first fighting game I played was not Street Fighter, like most people, it was Mortal Kombat 3, and at that time I didn’t have that much notion of how to “play” them. I played as a casual, “button-pushing” crowd.
Although at that time I ended up not paying much attention to the genre as a whole, never really delving into or spending more than a week playing any game of such genre.
It took many years before I started to really get interested in fighting games, and even longer to really understand how to play a fighting game by thinking about my opponent’s actions instead of how I played.
It was only when I met Smash Bros that I started to develop the insight that you need to have when playing a fighting game and that I started to really take the time to understand how fun it can be to understand all the controls and commands in a fighting game. It was from the moment I developed this that I started to like the genre even more, even discovering that my favorite character stereotypes are the zoners (an “appealing” doll that uses Hadouken from afar).
It was around the same time that an anime called High Score Girl was released, which only increased my passion for fighting games even more. The anime tells the story of a boy and a girl who meet each other playing fighting games in arcades and how fighting games were important in the development of their relationship. This anime made me feel a greater connection to fighting games, as it was around the same time that I started participating in the competitive Smash Ultimate scene.
Since then I always try to consume fighting game related content, either by playing (I spent 3 years playing smash ultimate competitively, who knows one day I’ll come back), watching tournaments, or watching someone I like playing (Justin Wong, Maximillian, Idom).
Currently I haven’t completely given up playing fighting games, even though I stopped playing Smash, I still play SFV during lunch time (even though it’s not good, I lack hate).
Who knows in another moment I will talk about the period that I played competitively, but for now I end my short daydream about fighting games with the following sentence fighting game helps you to have a much greater perception of your surroundings and others, because you are forced to observe your opponent to understand how to deal with him and dominate him.
